A new study by researchers at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Vanderbilt University suggests that protecting infants from a common, highly contagious and even deadly disease may be as easy as administering a routine vaccine two weeks earlier than it is typically given.
Vanderbilt University Medical Center nephrologist and associate professor of medicine Dr. William H. Fissell IV, is making major progress on a first-of-its kind device to free kidney patients from dialysis. He is building an implantable artificial kidney with microchip filters and living kidney cells that will be powered by a patient's own heart.
Fungal infections pose a major threat to hospital patients and have proven difficult to combat, but scientists have unlocked evidence that could lead to more effective treatment.
Epilepsy surgery can eliminate seizures for 60 to 85 percent of people with temporal lobe epilepsy who do not respond well to medications.
Accomplishing perhaps a world first, researchers at Columbia University and the Marine Biological Laboratory have mapped the full-body muscular activity of an animal while it was moving and behaving.
