In light of study findings released last week showing the risk of HIV transmission can be reduced by 96 percent if HIV-positive patients begin combination antiretroviral therapy as soon as possible, a San Francisco Chronicle editorial asks, "The evidence is clearly starting to show that it's much better to treat patients earlier, but from where will the money come?".
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Elliot F. Kaye and U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23) announced today the awardees of a first-of-its-kind grant program aimed at preventing pool and spa drownings and drain entrapments. Five local governments will receive more than $780,000 in Pool Safely Grant Program (PSGP) funds.
In two ancillary studies of two multi-center international clinical trials led by the University of Southern California Eye Institute, the injectable drug ocriplasmin appears to improve vision among patients suffering from symptomatic vitreomacular adhesion (VMA), a condition related to the aging eye that could cause permanent vision loss if left untreated.
The rise in AIDS death rates in sub-Saharan Africa has led to a burgeoning new category of neglected individuals - nearly a million orphaned elderly, or older adults living alone without the benefit of any caregivers, Stanford University School of Medicine researchers have found.
In addition to the "Monday back-to-work blues" trouble breathing, fatigue, headaches and congestion may be what many Chicagoans experience today due to toxic air quality. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has declared an air pollution action day for today, August 1, for the greater Chicago metropolitan area.
