Stevens Institute of Technology professor receives $50,000 grant to advance research into thoracic catheter

Vikki Hazelwood, PhD, a professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry and Biological Sciences at Stevens Institute of Technology, has received a $50,000 Innovation Grant from New Jersey Health Foundation/The Nicholson Foundation to advance research into a catheter that may prevent frequent complications for patients following a variety of surgical procedures, announced James M. Golubieski, president of New Jersey Health Foundation.

Study finds vaccine to lower cholesterol levels could also immunize against heart disease

In people with high cholesterol levels, the fat that is built up in the artery walls narrows the arteries causing a condition called atherosclerosis. A study published on 19th June in the European Heart Journal has found the likelihood of a vaccine that can immunize humans having atherosclerosis, subsequent to successful outcomes in a mouse model study. At present, phase I clinical trial has begun in patients to see the possibility of translating the study findings to humans.

Study sheds new light on the mechanics and physics of blood clotting

Heart attacks and strokes -; the leading causes of death in human beings -; are fundamentally blood clots of the heart and brain. Better understanding how the blood-clotting process works and how to accelerate or slow down clotting, depending on the medical need, could save lives.

Older adults spend more time watching TV, but find it less enjoyable

We usually scold our children and teenagers for watching too much TV. It turns out that their grandmas and grandpas spend even more of their time watching TV, and it is not good for them either, according to researchers at the Stein Institute for Research on Aging and Rady School of Management at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.
