Malaria kills a child every minute. While medical researchers have successfully developed effective drugs to kill the malaria parasite, efforts to treat the effects of the disease have not been as successful. But that soon may change.
The Swiss National Science Foundation is launching the National Research Programme "Smarter Health Care". 29 research teams will be looking for ways of providing better and more cost-efficient health services for people with chronic diseases.
Certain blood thinners approved to treat atrial fibrillation may put patients with chronic kidney disease at a higher risk of bleeding, according to the results of a study in an upcoming issue of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
In an article published in the January 18, 2007, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, Gerard Anderson, PhD, professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, highlights the need for more international assistance to address chronic non-communicable conditions affecting people living in low and middle income countries.
