An international project lead by the Molecular and Cell Biology Institute of Porto University with the participation of researchers from IMIM (Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute) has, for the first time ever, deciphered the mechanism by which a substance called anophelin binds to an enzyme (thrombin) involved in the process of blood coagulation.
Molecular Detection Inc. (MDI), a company developing Detect-Ready™ assays designed to increase the speed and accuracy of infectious disease diagnosis, and Palex Medical S.A., one of Spain's leading distributors of medical device and diagnostic products to hospitals, today announced that they have entered into an exclusive distribution agreement for MDI's Detect-Ready™ MRSA assay in Spain.
Diabetes is an increasing global epidemic that is expected to grow by more than 50 percent in the next two decades, leaving more than half a billion patients worldwide exposed to potentially life-altering medical complications, including pain and numbness in the feet, lost limbs, life-threatening disorders of the heart, liver and kidneys - and even blindness.
Starting with the tiny fruit fly and then moving into mice and humans, researchers at VIB and K. U. Leuven show that expression of the same gene suppresses cancer in all three organisms. Reciprocally, switching off the gene - called Ato in flies and ATOH1 in mammals - leads to cancer.
As the festive season comes to a close the British government has announced a £250 million ($390 million) industry-financed plan to promote healthy eating. Now millions of people will receive vouchers offering discounts on healthy foods. It is a part of the coalition government's ‘Change4Life' programme that is targeting Britain's growing rates of obesity. The Change4Life campaign was initially begun in 2009 by the previous Labour government, which said that if the plan failed to reduce obesity within three years it might look at regulating the food industry. Now the eight month old Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition feels regulations do not do the job but a gentle push towards healthy habits may help.
