Smoking not only causes bladder cancer-it also affects its course, in that people who smoke more have greater likelihood of developing more aggressive and deadly disease. That is one of the conclusions of a new study published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society.
Neither measure reached the 60-vote threshold needed to delay an interest rate increase for 7.4 million students with college loans. Republicans want to pay for it by abolishing a preventive health program in the health care law; Democrats proposed raising Medicare and Social Security payroll taxes on high-income owners of some privately held companies.
"A strong earthquake struck Haiti on Wednesday morning, shaking buildings and sending screaming people running into the streets only eight days after the country's capital was devastated by a previous quake," the Canadian Press reports. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the 6.1 magnitude quake was approximately 35 miles northwest of the capital of Port-au-Prince. "It was not immediately possible to ascertain what additional damage the new quake may have caused," the news service writes (Faul, 1/20).
Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues at the University of Florida studied health care providers to determine the factors associated with disparities in Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination among girls, ages 9 to 17, from low-income families.
The IOF Medal of Achievement has been presented today to Professor Adolfo Diez-Perez, MD, PhD, Head Emeritus of the Department of Internal Medicine, Hospital del Mar, Director of the Bone and Joint Research Unit at the Municipal Institute of Medical Research and Professor of Medicine at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
