Researchers from the UK report that patients with asthma continue to overestimate their asthma control, and many accept symptoms as the norm.
A study from the Stroke Service at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) has found that some patients who have survived an intracerebral hemorrhage - a stroke caused by bleeding in the brain - may be safely treated with aspirin to prevent future heart attacks or strokes caused by blood clots.
Surgery to remove localized tumors is the only reliable way to cure lung cancer, the most prevalent cause of cancer-related deaths in both men and women. The most common operation performed to remove these cancers is a lobectomy (removal of an anatomic portion of lung). Thoracic surgeons at Rush University Medical Center perform the largest number of these operations of any surgical group in Chicago and in most cases use minimally invasive techniques that speed recovery.
Home testing of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) followed by initiation of home treatment with an auto-titrating continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device reduced costs compared with in-laboratory testing and titration without negatively impacting clinical outcomes, researchers have shown in a new study presented at the American Thoracic Society International Conference.
Patients with terminal forms of leukaemia and lymphoma who have run out of treatment options could soon benefit from a new drug, which not only puts an end to chemotherapy and has virtually no side effects but also improves a patient's life expectancy and quality of life.
