The American Medical Association (AMA) sent a letter of support for legislation introduced today, H.R. 5, known as the Help Efficient, Accessible, Low-cost, Timely Healthcare (HEALTH) Act of 2011. The bi-partisan bill, introduced by Representatives Phil Gingrey, M.D. (R-GA), David Scott (D-GA), and Lamar Smith (R-TX) includes reforms intended to repair the broken medical liability system, reduce the growth of health care costs, and preserve patients' access to medical care.
Scientists at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Jefferson's Kimmel Cancer Center have received approval for a first-of-its kind study on the effect high dose vitamin C has on non-Hodgkin lymphoma patients.
A team of molecular biologists and computer scientists at Stony Brook University have used a novel method to weaken (attenuate) influenza virus by way of designing hundreds of mutations to its genetic code to create an effective vaccine. Reported online and in the July issue of Nature Biotechnology, the method may be a major step in developing more effective and safe vaccines against influenza, which claims 250,000 to 500,000 lives annually worldwide, partly because existing vaccines are not fully effective.
Recent American presidential elections have led to discussion of the importance of moral values and whether these values have tipped an electoral advantage to the political right.
