Kidney Health Australia (KHA) has released a report that predicts that the number of people needing treatment for serious kidney disease will triple to 30,000 by 2020 and treating serious kidney disease will cost the health system $12 billion over the next decade. The report, by the George Institute for Global Health, also found the annual cost of providing dialysis treatment was just over $79,000 per patient. This was compared to just over $49,000 per person taking part in a program which delivers the treatment not in a hospital but in the patient's home.
Almost all heart attack patients who need the emergency artery-opening procedure known as angioplasty are receiving it within 90 minutes of being admitted to the hospital, a marked improvement from five years ago when most patients waited longer for the life-saving procedure, according to a report by Yale School of Medicine researchers and their colleagues.
Nerve cells in the skin help wounds to heal. When an injury occurs, cells known as glial cells change into repair cells and disseminate into the wound, where they help the skin to regenerate, researchers from the University of Zurich have shown.
The statement "you are what you eat" is significant for the development of optimum mental performance in children as evidence is accumulating to show that nutrition pre-birth and in early life "programmes" long term health, well being, brain development and mental performance and that certain nutrients are important to this process.
