As World No Tobacco Day 2010 (May 31) approaches, Canadians thinking about quitting smoking can rely on nurses to help them butt out. The Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario says nurses are using the most up-to-date techniques to help smokers quit, which is reducing the number of smokers and preventing diseases.
School children in Clifton, Nottingham spent the morning in the kitchens of the East Midlands Conference Centre to make their own sandwiches. Assisted by head chef Ian Litchfield and second chef Carl Hutchinson, the children were chosen having entered a competition to design a 'healthy' sandwich to help celebrate the EMCC's 25th anniversary.
UT Dallas researchers recently demonstrated how nerve stimulation paired with specific experiences, such as movements or sounds, can reorganize the brain. This technology could lead to new treatments for stroke, tinnitus, autism and other disorders.
Zainab Akol, Uganda's AIDS Control Program director, said the health ministry has acquired enough antiretroviral (ARV) drugs to provide treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS until the end of the year, New Vision reports. In addition to 30 tons of drugs, the ministry received at the beginning of August from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, it also purchased ARVs worth about $20 million this month, Akol said (Kagolo, 8/27).
