People with mental illness have gotten a bad rap in past research studies, being labeled the group of people with the highest return rates to prison. But a researcher from the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University counters those findings in a new study-demonstrating that inmates with severe mental illnesses alone actually have lower rates of recidivism than those with substance abuse issues or no mental or substance abuse issues.
Research scientists have developed a novel method to re-create brain and intestinal stem cells from patients who died decades ago, using DNA from stored blood samples to study the potential causes of debilitating illnesses such as inflammatory bowel disease.
According to a recent report issued by the Centers for Disease Control, every year more than two million people develop infections that are resistant to antibiotics. Specific healthcare-associated infections are classified as urgent threats and affect approximately 1.7 million people annually across the United States, leading to death in nearly 99,000 patients.
Some people living in disadvantaged neighborhoods may be at increased risk of problem drinking-though much may depend on race and gender, according to a new study in the November issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.
Researchers are developing a Wearable Artificial Kidney for dialysis patients, reports an upcoming paper in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN). "Our vision of a technological breakthrough has materialized in the form of a Wearable Artificial Kidney, which provides continuous dialysis 24 hours a day, seven days a week," comments Victor Gura, MD (David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA).
