Every 70 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer's disease.¹ In conjunction with National Older Driver Safety Awareness Week, Dec. 6-12, leading researchers are joining forces to encourage families to talk openly with loved ones about driving as soon as they are diagnosed with a form of dementia.
Led by Dr Ben Lehner, group leader at the EMBL-CRG Systems Biology Unit and ICREA and AXA Professor, together with Dr Tanya Vavouri from the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute and the Institute for Health Science Research Germans Trias i Pujol, the researchers noticed that the impact of environmental change can be passed on in the genes for many generations while studying C. elegans worms carrying a transgene array - a long string of repeated copies of a gene for a fluorescent protein that had been added into the worm genome using genetic engineering techniques.
Daniel Corcos has studied Parkinson's disease for more than 20 years. For most of the past 10, he has focused on the effects of exercise. "It became obvious several years ago that exercise really was good for people with Parkinson's disease," said Corcos, who is professor of kinesiology and nutrition at the University of Illinois at Chicago. "Not only is it good for the heart, the brain, and muscles in the same way it is for healthy people, it also modifies signs and symptoms of Parkinson's disease."
Prana Biotechnology Limited has announced that it has identified novel therapeutic drug candidates from its Parkinson's disease program. Already, a lead candidate drug has demonstrated positive effects in pre-clinical studies, protecting the brain from damage to the substantia nigra, the area of the brain affected in Parkinson's disease.
