Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot in the deep veins in the legs. These clots can break loose and travel to the lungs, causing a potentially fatal pulmonary embolism (PE). Even when they don't, they can cause permanent damage to the leg veins that results in long-term pain, swelling, and disability of the leg.
With a goal of creating jobs and enhancing chronic disease studies, the federal government is awarding a $9.7 million grant of stimulus funds to the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (LA BioMed) for the construction of a new Chronic Disease Clinical Research Center on its campus, David I. Meyer, PhD, the institute's president and CEO, announced today.
Physical fitness and regular exercise reduces a major predictor of cardiovascular disease in adults with normal blood pressure or mild hypertension. Physical conditioning in the absence of medication is not, however, as advantageous to the more severe hypertensive patient, reported researchers at the American Society of Hypertension Twentieth Annual Scientific Meeting.
New data offer hints to why Parkinson's disease so selectively harms brain cells that produce the chemical dopamine, say researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
Data presented at the American Urological Association Annual Meeting demonstrate that treatment for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia with GreenLight XPS laser therapy with MoXy fiber, instead of transurethral resection of the prostate, results in significantly shorter hospitalization, catheterization, and recovery times for patients, while maintaining equivalent safety and efficacy.
