In a medical first, a revolutionary synthetic blood has saved the life of a Victorian woman. Doctors at The Alfred brought Tamara Coakley, 33, back from the brink of death after a horrific car crash left her with severe blood loss and dangerously close to heart failure.
The Independent Citizens Oversight Committee of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine unanimously approved yesterday two grants worth a total of almost $8 million to University of California San Diego School of Medicine researchers investigating novel stem cell-based treatments for acute myeloid leukemia or AML.
Scientists have identified and described stem cells specific to several tissues and organs of the body - key master cells that give rise to the specialized cell types characteristic of that organ.
USAID on Friday released Volume 3, Issue 11 of its online newsletter. The issue highlights the XIX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012), held in Washington, D.C., last week, and features a recap of the agency's humanitarian response in the Horn of Africa over the past year.
For decades, scientists have known that ET-743, a compound extracted from a marine invertebrate called a mangrove tunicate, can kill cancer cells. The drug has been approved for use in patients in Europe and is in clinical trials in the U.S.
