New research published in Cell Reports identifies a potential treatment target for blinding diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa and advanced dry age-related macular degeneration.
The air traveller who flitted across Europe in a bid to avoid authorities because he had a rare form of tuberculosis (TB), apparently has a father-in-law who is a tuberculosis researcher for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the U.S.
A team of Medical University of South Carolina Hollings Cancer Center researchers received a three-year, $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defens to test a potential therapeutic antibody that could block breast cancer growth with fewer side effects, opening up potential for future drug development.
Current research suggests that pandemic H1N1 influenza of swine origin has distinct means of transmission from the seasonal flu, yet does not result in the pathogenic severity of avian flu viruses.
"Despite [the] economic crisis rippling around the world," Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, "is pushing countries to continue foreign aid efforts to poor and developing nations, saying that every dollar of aid 'makes a huge difference,'" ABC News reports.
