A new clinical study on the early detection of atrial fibrillation at home is starting at the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research. This cardiac arrhythmia is responsible for a quarter of all strokes and yet the risk of patients with atrial fibrillation having a stroke can be reduced by 70 percent if they take anticoagulants early enough.
New research looking at the biological process involved in breast cancer development has strengthened the argument for a potential link between alcohol consumption and the disease.
The study uses a potent immune-enhancing gene delivered directly into the cancer cells to make them look foreign to the body's immune system, which will then attack and destroy the cancer.
Researchers from the Indiana University School of Medicine and colleagues at the University of Texas Southwestern and Case Western University have determined how the protein Mdm2, which is elevated in late-stage cancers, disables genes that suppress the growth of tumors. The finding may lead to the development of new drugs for late stage breast cancer and other difficult to treat malignancies.
