A new method, which analyzes the sounds in a child's cough, could soon be used in poor, remote regions to diagnose childhood pneumonia reliably. According to Udantha Abeyratne from the University of Queensland in Australia and colleagues, this simple technique of recording coughs with a microphone on the patient's bedside table, has the potential to revolutionize the management of childhood pneumonia in remote regions around the world.
A structure called "the microtubule network" is a crucial part of our nervous system. It acts as a transportation system within nerve cells, carrying essential proteins and enabling cell-to-cell communications. But in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, ALS, and Parkinson's, this network breaks down, hindering motor abilities and cognitive function.
Today, CureDuchenne, a nonprofit dedicated to raising funds and awareness for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), announced that on March 19, 2010 the organization's scientific advisors from around the country will come together in the fight to find a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Group-based education resulted in improved diabetes control as reflected by blood glucose levels and patients' knowledge of diabetes. Evidence also suggested that participants in diabetes group education programs may reduce their blood pressure and body weight and increase self-empowerment, quality of life, self-management skills and treatment satisfaction.
