Assistant Professor Jason Farley says one reason he's confident that the new HIV/AIDS degree program at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing will draw plenty of interest from prospective students is that so many of the current students and alumni he's met over the years arrive on campus with a strong interest in HIV.
The nation's worst hospitals treat twice the proportion of elderly black patients and poor patients than the best hospitals, and their patients are more likely to die of heart attacks and pneumonia, new research shows. Now, these hospitals, mostly in the South, may be at higher risk of financial failure, too. That's because the nation's new health care law punishes bad care by withholding some money, says the lead author of the study published Wednesday in the journal Health Affairs.
Health care practitioners have long understood the importance of "door to balloon" time for heart attack patients-the faster they can get the patient from the door of the hospital to a catheterization lab to open a clogged artery, the better the patient will do.
When parents hear the word "epilepsy," it typically triggers images of severe seizures – the ones that are easy to identify, involving a child falling, getting stiff and shaking all over. But the truth is, there are over 300,000 children and teens in the U.S. with epilepsy, and not all of them display such obvious signs of their medical condition.
In a discovery suggesting that odors may have a far more important role in life than previously believed, scientists have found that heart, blood, lung and other cells in the body have the same receptors for sensing odors that exist in the nose.
