A study led by Boston Medical Center indicates that most patients with chronic pain who are hospitalized after a nonfatal opioid overdose continue to receive prescription opioids after the overdose and are at high risk for experiencing a repeated overdose.
Representatives of the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases, the UK Medical Research Council and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research today signed a cooperation agreement that aims to establish and apply harmonised guidelines and technologies for research on neurodegenerative diseases.
President Obama, who offered to work with Republicans last year to revamp the health care reform law, is expected to adopt a much different tone in Tuesday's State of the Union address. Bruised from the huge GOP electoral gains in 2010, Obama said he wanted to work in a bipartisan fashion on health care in last year's speech. Republicans scoffed at what was called an olive branch, and worked to repeal the entire law. While the GOP-led House passed such a measure, the legislation was defeated in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
Fatih Uckun, Jianjun Cheng and their colleagues have taken the first steps towards developing a so-called "smart bomb" to attack the most common and deadly form of childhood cancer — called B-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
Yesterday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the Novartis drug Afinitor for the treatment of advanced pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.
