Researchers with Johns Hopkins Children's Center found that more than half of all violence-related injuries in youth treated in the emergency department were due to family violence, including child maltreatment and physical fighting. Most events involved parents or guardians.
In a study, researchers at the University of São Paulo's Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine, in Brazil, finds that the more frequent the migraine attacks, the more severe will be the so-called temporomandibular disorder, or TMD. The temporomandibular joint acts like a sliding hinge connecting the jawbone to the skull, therefore the disorder's symptoms includes difficulty chewing and joint tension.
US researchers have shown that patients with both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma have more exacerbations, less emphysema and more airway disease than patients with COPD alone.
New developments in regenerative medicine are bringing about exciting, novel approaches to create therapies for hard to treat diseases. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a hard to treat disorder that progressively blocks airflow in the lungs making it increasingly difficult for an individual to breathe, and is one of the leading illnesses in the US. Yet, current treatments for COPD can only try to limit the extent of damage to the lungs, and to bring some relief from symptoms.
Physician scientists at the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital (THI at St. Luke's) have been awarded a grant of almost $1.5 million by the National Institutes of Health for research into treatments for patients with end-stage heart failure that would combine heart-assist devices and adult stem-cell treatments.
