University of Virginia Health System and Novant Health are in discussions to create a Northern Virginia regional health system. The proposed agreement would include UVA Culpeper Hospital and all of Novant Health's Virginia facilities, including Novant Health Haymarket Medical Center, Novant Health Prince William Medical Center and Novant Health Cancer Center.
A new study, published on the cover of the scientific journal Biological Psychiatry and lead by Dr Carlos Saura from the Institut de Neurociències at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, reveals a new molecular mechanism essential for associative memory encoding in the hippocampus.
A team of Chinese researchers have for the first time "mended" defective embryos using chemical surgery to free them of a faulty gene that leads to beta thalassemia. Until now this defect was found to be incorrigible caused due to a single misspelling in the DNA code. Beta thalassemia is a dreaded blood disorder wherein the child is unable to make healthy blood needing blood transfusions on a regular basis. The study was published this week in the journal Protein and Cell.
