A study published in the March issue of Anesthesiology found that elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), as well as normal elderly undergoing surgery experienced increased levels of brain atrophy beyond what is expected from normal aging.
In current health lore, antioxidants are all the rage, as "everybody knows" that reducing the amount of "reactive oxygen species" - cell-damaging molecules that are byproducts of cellular metabolism - is critical to staying healthy. What everyone doesn't know is that our bodies already have a complex set of processes built into our cells that handle these harmful byproducts of living and repair the damage they cause.
Hospitals typically provide excellent end-of-life care for their patients. But when GPs assume responsibility for terminal patients, things don't always go so well.
Cisplatin is one of the most powerful and effective drugs for treating a wide variety of cancers, but many tumors develop resistance to this drug, ultimately limiting its benefits for cancer patients.
In a Think Tank post Thursday, I wrote about how insurers deciding to participate next year in the health exchanges established under Obamacare could be expecting funds that the federal government may not have legal authority to disburse. But that's not the only potential pitfall for carriers: They could also end up on the hook for payment reductions caused by sequestration (Chris Jacobs, 6/23).
