Naturally-derived anti-oxidants have become the 'it' health ingredient to look for in food. But researchers from UBC Okanagan and the University of Bologna have discovered that TEMPO-a well-known artificial anti-oxidant-is up to 100 times more powerful than nature's best and could help counteract everything from skin damage to Alzheimer's Disease.
Today the National Academy of Sciences announced a three-year, $271,930 grant to chemist Vincent Rotello at the University of Massachusetts Amherst to develop, test and deploy new, sensitive, reliable and affordable inkjet-printed, nanoparticle-based test strips for detecting disease-causing bacteria in drinking water, with researchers at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Pakistan.
A preclinical study led by scientists at Sanford Burnham Prebys has established that AAV8-TNAP-D10-a gene therapy that replaces a key enzyme found in bone-may be a safe and effective single-dose treatment for hypophosphatasia (HPP).
One mouse with weak bones appears to have a strong metabolism, even on a high-fat diet, scientists report. While weaker bones are clearly not a good thing, scientists suspect that, somewhere in the conversation between the genetically engineered mouse's skeleton and the rest of its body, there may be an answer that helps obese individuals avoid some of the worst ravages of this health epidemic.
