Tea is the world's second most-consumed beverage after water. According to a new report published in the current issue of HerbalEGram — the American Botanical Council's (ABC) monthly online magazine — sales of loose, bagged, concentrated, and herbal tea in the United States increased by 5.9% in 2013, reaching a total of $1,751,055,302.
Levodopa, or L-dopa, is considered the most effective treatment for Parkinson's disease today. After a few years of treatment, however, almost all patients develop a debilitating side-effect called L-dopa induced dyskinesia, or LID, which causes involuntary movements in the limbs, face, and torso. Deep brain stimulation can alleviate LID, but the procedure is highly invasive and not all patients are eligible.
A Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine study in the November 22 issue of Journal of Biological Chemistry, explains how vitamin A is generated from beta carotene, its dietary precursors. The discovery sheds new light into how beta carotene's enzymes are utilized differently contributing to the vitamin's production. This insight will help guide solutions for vitamin A deficiency, a global public health problem affecting more than half of all countries, according to the World Health Organization.
McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) researchers have defined genetic resistance to the widespread virus, cytomegalovirus (CMV)-a member of the viral group that causes some of the world's most prevalent diseases, such as herpes, chicken pox and mononucleosis.
