A team of scientists from Texas set out to find what it would take to live a very long life and they made important discoveries that bring longer life spans much closer to reality. A new research report featured on the cover of The FASEB Journal, describes how scientists "activated" life extension in the worm, C. elegans, and in the process discovered a new metabolic state correlating with long life.

Researchers provide new insights into vertebrae formation

Like a string of pearls, the spine is made of a series of similar vertebrae. A so-called segmentation clock creates this repetitive arrangement in developing embryos: Each time the clock ticks, a vertebra starts to form.

Daily regimen of ibuprofen can ward off Alzheimer's disease, say neuroscientists

A Vancouver-based research team led by Canada's most cited neuroscientist, Dr. Patrick McGeer, has successfully carried out studies suggesting that, if started early enough, a daily regimen of the non-prescription NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) ibuprofen can prevent the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

New digital angiography flat panel system reduces the radiation dose to patients undergoing interventional treatment for liver cancer

The study compared the radiation dose to patient's skin during transcatheter arterial embolization, a procedure that blocks the flow of a blood to a tumor. Doses were assessed for 12 patients using a new angiography unit with a digital flat-panel system and 12 using a conventional unit for angiographic imaging.
