Texas Children's Hospital is the nation's first pediatric hospital to discharge a child while on an intracorporeal ventricular assist device (VAD), a feat previously accomplished only at adult institutions. The patient, 16-year-old Francisco "Frank" De Santiago, who was implanted with a mechanical heart pump called the HeartMate II on May 19, 2009, was discharged on Oct. 29, 2009.
Congress is finally getting down to real work on legislation to end "surprise" medical bills, which patients get if they inadvertently receive care from an out-of-network health providers or use one in an emergency.
EarlySense, developer of the EverOn contact-free, patient supervision system for hospital and post acute care, announced today the results of a multicenter study conducted at several hospitals in the United States and Israel. The data were recently made public by Drs. Eyal Zimlichman, Martine Szyper-Kravitz, Howard Amital, and Yehuda Shoenfeld at the American Thoracic Society Conference in New Orleans in a presentation titled, Recognizing Specific Respiratory Patterns Preceding in Hospital Clinical Deterioration, a Multicenter Study.
In the largest and longest head-to-head comparison of two anti-clotting medications, warfarin and aspirin were similar in preventing deaths and strokes in heart failure patients with normal heart rhythm, according to late-breaking research presented at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference 2012.
myTomorrows (Amsterdam, the Netherlands), announced today that it has started a collaboration with Spectrum Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Henderson, USA) to provide access to its liposome-encapsulated vincristine for treatment of Philadelphia chromosome negative acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
