Scientists have developed a way to see brain cells talk – to actually see neurons communicate in bright, vivid color. The new lab technique is set to provide long-needed answers about the brain and neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia and depression.
Instead of a sleeping pill or a mood enhancer, a nose full of jasmine from Gardenia jasminoides could also help: in collaboration with Dr. Olga Sergeeva and Prof. Helmut Hass from the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf, researchers from Bochum led by Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. Hanns Hatt have discovered that the two fragrances Vertacetal-coeur (VC) and the chemical variation (PI24513) have the same molecular mechanism of action and are as strong as the commonly prescribed barbiturates or propofol.
We like to keep the air in our homes as clean as possible, and sometimes we use HEPA air filters to keep offending allergens and dust particles at bay.
Every 66 seconds, someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Frank LaFerla, dean of UCI's Francisco J. Ayala School of Biological Sciences, says that with more than 76 million aging baby boomers in the U.S., the memory-impairing condition is "the most important medical problem of our time – and one that's going to intensify greatly over the next 20 years."
