Ontarians should be alarmed that the Liberal government is planning a radical restructuring of health care "premised not on quality of care and best practices, but solely on which hospital can do their surgeries most cheaply," says Michael Hurley, the president of the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions (OCHU) - which represents 30,000 CUPE hospital workers.
In a new study, researchers at Uppsala University have been able to show differences in how Rituximab, a monoclonal antibody drug, interacts with the blood of healthy individuals compared to patients with chronic lymphatic leukemia. This has awakened hopes that this analysis method could pave the way for important breakthroughs in immunotherapy research and treatment.
A research group headed by Professor Outi Mäkitie, Unviersity of Helsinki, identified in families with childhood-onset osteoporosis disease-causing mutations in a gene that had previously not been connected with the skeletal system or osteoporosis.
A small but significant study in the U.S. has found that a treatment which was designed to clear blocked carotid arteries and prevent stroke has also improved brain function.
Although only a portion of Wednesday night's debate was supposed to focus on health issues, the presidential candidates sparred on Medicare, Medicaid and specific provisions of the health law throughout the entire 90-minute event.
