Pharmaceutical Care Management Association President and CEO Mark Merritt released the following statement on President Obama's budget proposal that would grant brand-name drug manufacturers seven years of market exclusivity before generic versions of biologic products can enter the market, instead of the 12 years that was passed in the health reform bill.
A normal but concerning consequence of pregnancy is the fact that pregnant women are more susceptible to infection. University of Minnesota Medical School researchers have identified the underlying mechanisms for this physiologic immune suppression that may lead to new therapies to help ward off infections during pregnancy.
Performing surgical operations without leaving scars has ceased to be a chimera and has become a reality. This is demonstrated by the recent surgical advances made using NOTES (Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopy Surgery), an innovative surgical approach that allows surgical access using the body's natural orifices.
Timing is everything when treating patients with both HIV and tuberculosis. Starting HIV therapy in such patients within two weeks of TB treatment, rather than two months as is the current practice, increases survival by 33 percent, according to a large-scale clinical trial in Cambodia led by researchers at Children's Hospital Boston and the Immune Disease Institute.
The Alzheimer's Society is to receive a grant of more than £200,000 from the Community Fund for stem cell research into potential treatments for Alzheimer's disease.
