In a surprising finding with significant implications for older women, researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University and NYU School of Medicine have found that high levels of triglycerides (blood fats) are the strongest risk factor for the most common type of stroke in older women – more of a risk factor than elevated levels of total cholesterol or of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.
Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and Pfizer report that preliminary results from the Phase 3 AVERROES clinical trial of the investigational drug apixaban compared with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA, or aspirin) in patients with atrial fibrillation expected to be or demonstrated to be unsuitable for warfarin therapy will be presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2010. The results will be presented during the "Hot Line" session on August 31, 2010, in Stockholm, Sweden.
Epilepsy affects more than 65 million people worldwide. One-third of these patients have seizures that are not controlled by medications. In addition, one-third have brain lesions, the hallmark of the disease, which cannot be located by conventional imaging methods.
DBV Technologies, creator of Viaskin, a new standard in the treatment of allergies, announced today that it entered into a strategic manufacturing agreement with Sanofi to produce Viaskin's Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API), such as the peanut protein extract.
