FDA approves first non-insulin drug for treatment of pediatric patients with type 2 diabetes

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Victoza (liraglutide) injection for treatment of pediatric patients 10 years or older with type 2 diabetes.

Walnuts prevent heart disease

A new clinical study shows that substituting walnuts for monounsaturated fat in a Mediterranean diet improves, and even restores, endothelial function (the property of arteries to dilate in order to meet an increased demand of blood, for instance due to a physical effort). Walnuts also reduce harmful cell adhesion molecules which are associated with atherosclerosis, commonly known as hardening of the arteries. These dual effects enhance the circulatory system, therefore aiding in the prevention of heart disease.

RECOTHROM topical hemostat exhibits low rate of anti-product antibody formation

ZymoGenetics, Inc., today announced the publication of pooled safety and immunogenicity observations from eight clinical trials of RECOTHROM in the February issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. The authors concluded that RECOTHROM is a well-tolerated topical hemostatic agent in numerous surgical settings and has a low rate of anti-product antibody formation. In the pooled data from all trials, less than one percent of treated patients developed product-specific antibodies. None of the antibodies neutralized native coagulation proteins.

New study finds link between childhood maltreatment and adult sleep problems

Adults who experienced multiple incidents of childhood maltreatment were more than two times as likely to have trouble sleeping than their counterparts who were not maltreated during childhood, according to a new study from researchers at the University of Toronto, University of Ottawa, and Western University.
