Study questions whether FDA too tough on online pharmacies

The Food and Drug Administration has warned people about the many dangers of buying medications from foreign pharmacies over the Internet. While some sites might offer high-quality medicines, there are plenty that sell bogus and potentially dangerous products. But a recent economic analysis suggests that while there's good reason for the safety warnings, the FDA's stance on the matter might go too far.

Multitasking proteins driving cell behavior

A study describing how cells within blood vessel walls move en masse overturns an assumption common in the age of genomics - that the proteins driving cell behavior are doing so much multitasking that it would be near impossible to group them according to a few discrete functions.

Hospitals get graded for patient safety

Hospital executives are about to find out if they make the grade under a new rating system developed by the Leapfrog Group that debuts online Wednesday -; and some are not happy about it. Under Leapfrog's Hospital Safety Score initiative, hospitals are given a letter grade -; A, B, C, D or F -; on how safely they treat patients. The grade reflects patient injuries, infection rates and the frequency of medical and medication errors.

Breastfeeding during anti-epilepsy drug treatment does not appear to harm a child's cognitive development

A first of its kind study finds breastfeeding while taking certain seizure medications does not appear to harm a child's cognitive development. The research will be presented at the upcoming American Academy of Neurology 60th Anniversary Annual Meeting in Chicago, April 12-19, 2008.
