Obesity rates elevated in childhood cancer survivors who are exposed to certain treatments

Individuals who had cancer as a child may be at increased risk of being obese due to the therapies they received during their youth. The finding comes from a new study published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society. The study's results suggest the need for effective counseling and weight loss interventions for certain childhood cancer survivors.

Regulators puzzling out what insurers must do under new health law

The Washington Post reports that regulators are "trying to resolve" which insurance plans must comply with the health law's new requirements. "In keeping with President Obama's promise that you can hold on to your insurance if you like it, the new law exempts existing health plans from many of its provisions. But the law leaves it to regulators to decide how much a health plan can change without giving up its grandfathered status."

Linagliptin as monotherapy or in combination with metformin reduces blood glucose levels in T2D patients

Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly and Company today announced new data from a Phase IV study evaluating linagliptin (5 mg) as monotherapy and in combination with metformin (1500 or 2000 mg) in treatment-naive adults with newly diagnosed (<12 months) uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes.

Pathologists use ProExC antibody cocktail to determine tumor recurrence

Partnering with head and neck surgeons, pathologists at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center's Norris Cotton Cancer Center developed a new use for an old test to determine if a patient's cancer is recurring, or if the biopsy shows benign inflammation of mucosal tissues. In Pathology - Research and Practice, lead author Candice C. Black, DO explained how her team confirmed the utility of ProExC, an existing antibody cocktail commonly used for pathology tests of the uterine cervix.
