Last year, a Wyss Institute team of scientists described the development of a new device to treat sepsis that works by mimicking our spleen. It cleanses pathogens and toxins from blood circulating through a dialysis-like circuit. Now, the Wyss Institute team has developed an improved device that synergizes with conventional antibiotic therapies and that has been streamlined to better position it for near-term translation to the clinic.
HTG, Inc., provider of the quantitative Nuclease Protection Assay (qNPA™), today announced it signed a collaboration agreement with the John Wayne Cancer Institute (JWCI) at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California. Under the terms of the agreement, HTG and JWCI (Department of Molecular Oncology, Dave S. B. Hoon, Ph.D., Director) will collaborate to generate a novel mRNA signature that can measure the gene expression differences in melanoma and benign nevi using HTG's qNPA technology in classical surgical pathology samples.
The first results from a large-scale study of key antimalarial medicines in ten Sub-Saharan African countries reveal that a high percentage of medicines circulating on national markets are of substandard quality and thus may contribute to the growth of drug-resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum, the most virulent form of malaria.
Hospital-borne infections are a serious risk of a long-term hospital stay, and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), a lung infection that develops in about 15% of all people who are ventilated, is among the most dangerous.
According to new research into sports and physical education (PE) at school by the Women's Sport & Fitness Foundation (WSF) suggests that the embarrassment of PE classes can put young women off exercise for the rest of their life.
