Protesters ask U.S. to boost funding for Global Fund, HIV/AIDS programs in Africa

Thousands of protesters in Pretoria, South Africa, Thursday "demand[ed] the U.S. increase its AIDS funding for Africa," the Associated Press reports (Naki, 6/17). The protesters delivered a letter to the consulate saying the U.S. is "cutting funding to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria," which health advocates believe could lead "other countries to follow suit and reduce funding for the fight against HIV," Agence France-Presse writes (6/17).

Financial Times examines how GAVI's $2.6B shortfall might affect new vaccine programs in developing countries

GAVI Alliance's plan to introduce new vaccine projects in the developing world "is under threat amid the international economic downturn," the Financial Times reports. "Subsidies to extend the use of vaccines against rubella, HPV to tackle cervical cancer, cholera and Japanese encephalitis in the developing world are among those likely to be cancelled or delayed," according to GAVI's CEO Julian Lob-Levyt, the newspaper writes.

IBM introduces new service that can enable health systems to exchange patient data with physicians

At the HIMSS10 Conference at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia, IBM introduced Initiate Exchange, a new service that enables health systems to exchange patient data with physicians. The company also announced that Initiate client CareSpark, has been awarded a Social Security Administration contract through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
