Researchers discover genetic alterations responsible for Kabuki syndrome

Using a new, rapid and less expensive DNA sequencing strategy, scientists have discovered genetic alterations that account for most cases of Kabuki syndrome, a rare disorder that causes multiple birth defects and mental retardation. Instead of sequencing the entire human genome, the new approach sequences just the exome, the 1-2 percent of the human genome that contains protein-coding genes.

Merck researchers to participate in two new collaborative efforts to study HIV latency

Merck, known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, today announced that company researchers will participate in two new collaborative efforts led by the prominent academic institutions of the University of North Carolina (UNC) Chapel Hill and the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) to develop new approaches towards eradicating HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

FDA approves Lannett's ANDA for Ondansetron Injection USP, 2 mg/mL, Multi-Dose Vials

Lannett Company, Inc. today announced that it has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for Ondansetron Injection USP, 2 mg/mL, Multi-Dose Vials. Ondansetron Injection USP, 2 mg/mL is the generic equivalent of GlaxoSmithKline's ZofranĀ® Injection, 2 mg/mL. For the 12 months ending December 2009 U.S. sales of Ondansetron Injection USP, 2 mg/mL were approximately $58 million at Average Wholesale Price (AWP). A launch date for the product has not yet been set.

Study to look at whether maternal exercise during pregnancy can reduce risk of cancer in offspring

If a mother exercises during her pregnancy, will that benefit her children? Researchers at the University of Kentucky have initiated studies to look into the idea: a group from the UK Graduate Center for Nutritional Sciences has received a $100,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to study whether maternal exercise during pregnancy can lead to a reduced risk of cancer in offspring.
