Bayat Foundation inaugurates construction of Gawhartaj Bayat maternity hospital in Afghanistan

In a country that leads in infant mortality rates, the Bayat Foundation inaugurated the construction of a maternity hospital in a ceremony with local officials. Named "Gawhartaj Bayat", this much needed facility will accommodate space for 20 beds, a pharmacy, laboratory, and include modern equipment. The project is scheduled to be complete and open for care by October 1, 2010 in Gardez, the capital of the southeast province of Paktia in Afghanistan.

Study: ICSI technique no better than conventional IVF

The use of an assisted reproduction technique known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) doubled between 1996 and 2012, although compared with conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF), use of ICSI was not associated with improved reproductive outcomes, according to a study in the January 20 issue of JAMA.

Amgen reports positive findings from AMG 145 Phase 3 studies in patients at risk for cardiovascular disease

Amgen (NASDAQ: AMGN) today announced new detailed data from three Phase 3 studies that showed treatment with its novel investigational cholesterol-lowering medication, evolocumab (AMG 145), resulted in a statistically significant reduction of 55-66 percent in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) compared to placebo in patients with high cholesterol.

COPD becomes third leading cause of death in the U.S.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) released a report today, "Deaths: Preliminary Data for 2008," confirming that Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) became the third leading cause of death in the U.S. for 2008.
