Milken Institute SPH wins $4 million grant to address iron deficiency and anemia in India

The Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University today announced receiving a $4 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for a three-year project that aims to address a serious public health problem in India: iron deficiency and anemia.

New study focuses on best, cost effective practices to bridge treatment gap for brain disorders

Up to eight out of ten patients with a brain disorder remain untreated or inadequately treated. This was the focus of the European Brain Council's study entitled The Value of Treatment which was discussed at the Congress of the European Academy of Neurology in Lisbon.

Scientists discover unknown function of dopamine in brain

A study of the salamander brain has led researchers at Karolinska Institutet to discover a hitherto unknown function of the neurotransmitter dopamine. In an article published in the scientific journal Cell Stem Cell they show how in acting as a kind of switch for stem cells, dopamine controls the formation of new neurons in the adult brain. Their findings may one day contribute to new treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's.

The Telethon Institute for Child Health Research study is the first to show low levels of the vitamin in utero can harm a child's language development, including the ability to pick up new words and string together sentences.
