Children with hypertension more likely to have learning disabilities, ADHD

Children who have hypertension are much more likely to have learning disabilities than children with normal blood pressure, according to a new University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) study published this week in the journal, Pediatrics. In fact, when variables such as socio-economic levels are evened out, children with hypertension were four times more likely to have cognitive problems.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee to mark up $3.5B Haiti reconstruction bill

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee Tuesday is expected to mark up a bill that would "authorize $3.5 billion in reconstruction funds for Haiti over five years" and would also require USAID "to submit a long-term reconstruction plan to Congress as well as mandate the president to appoint a senior policy coordinator for Haiti," The Hill reports (Bogardus, 5/23).

OATS procedure superior to microfracture in repairing cartilage defects

A new study has demonstrated that a procedure wherein healthy cartilage is transplanted to fix an area of damaged cartilage (osteoarticular cartilage transplantation or OATS procedure) is superior to the standard of care for repairing cartilage defects. It is thought that fixing such lesions may ultimately help to prevent the onset of osteoarthritis, and get athletic individuals back to sporting activities reliably.

Hospice Care

Hospice care is a type of care and philosophy of care that focuses on the palliation of a chronically ill, terminally ill or seriously ill patient's pain and symptoms, and attending to their emotional and spiritual needs. Care may be provided in a patient's home or in a designated facility such as nursing home, hospital unit or freestanding hospice, with level of care and sometimes location based upon frequent evaluation of the paients needs. The four primary levels of care provided by hospice are routine home care, continuous care, general inpatient and respite care.
