Addiction to high calorie fat rich food: likened to cocaine and heroin addiction

In a new research our worst fears are confirmed – fatty, fried and fattening foods are addictive. The addiction with these delicious ‘yummies' may be as potent as that with cocaine or heroin. The study was conducted on experimental animals, rats in this case. When fed with fatty foods in great quantities these rats showed a compulsive need to eat.

DNA damage caused by UVA radiation leads to melanoma

A new study by researchers at NYU School of Medicine found that UVA radiation damages the DNA in human melanocyte cells, causing mutations that can lead to melanoma. Melanocytes, which contain a substance called melanin that darkens the skin to protect it from the ultraviolet rays of the sun, are more vulnerable to UVA radiation than normal skin cells because they are unable to repair themselves as efficiently.

FDA accepts King's ACUROX NDA for filing with Priority review classification

Acura Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that it has been informed by King Pharmaceuticals Research and Development Inc. (King) that King's New Drug Application (NDA) for ACUROX® (oxycodone HCl) Tablets was accepted for filing by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with a Priority review classification and a Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) date of June 17, 2011.

Scientists have isolated a new bacterium in pigs' stomachs thanks to a pioneering technique, offering hope of new treatments to people who suffer with stomach ulcers, according to research published in the June issue of the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology.
