Commonly used pain reliever may be associated with asthma in children and adults

New research shows that the widely used pain reliever acetaminophen may be associated with an increased risk of asthma and wheezing in both children and adults exposed to the drug. Researchers from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada, conducted a systematic review and metaanalysis of 19 clinical studies (total>The analysis showed that the pooled odds ratio (odds ratio for all studies combined) for asthma among users of acetaminophen was 1.63.

Researchers find new genomic approach to identify smokers at risk of lung cancer

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine in collaboration with investigators at the University of Utah, have discovered a new approach for identifying smokers at the highest risk for developing lung cancer. The findings, which appear in the April 7th issue of Science Translational Medicine, will allow the researchers to use a genomic approach to prevent lung cancer in these individuals and to personalize cancer chemoprophylaxis and therapy.

Newly discovered compound shows potential for treating Parkinson's disease

A joint research group centered around Professor Hideyuki Okano and Associate Professor Jun Kohyama, Department of Physiology of the Keio University School of Medicine, together with a research group of Eisai Co., Ltd. has identified a compound that has the potential to be a treatment for Parkinson's disease by using dopaminergic neurons differentiated from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells from patients with familial Parkinson's disease.

Stanley awards $15 million to provide operation, infrastructure support for Nationwide Health Information Network

Stanley, Inc., a leading provider of systems integration and professional services to the U.S. federal government, today announced that it was awarded two time-and-materials contracts valued at $15 million, with exercise of options, by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Office of the National Coordinator (ONC). These two awards follow an award from DHHS that the company announced on August 2, 2010, to provide operation and infrastructure support for the Nationwide Health Information Network. All three awards fall under the company's Chief Information Officer – Solutions and Partners 2 Innovations contract with the National Institutes of Health Information Technology Acquisition and Assessment Center (NITAAC).
