In addition to the quality of life benefits, the Policy Paper said reducing the incidence of depression by widespread Internet use among older Americans could trim the nation's health care bill.

Cougar myth busted

A new study shows that the phenomenon of the "cougar" where an older woman seeks a younger partner is a myth, confined to the world of celebrities. The study looked into online dating and was conducted by the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC). The study found the conventional – men looking for younger and attractive women and women looking for older and wealthier men.

Health law gives consumers new rights to appeal insurer decisions

The Obama administration issued regulations yesterday addressing a top consumer gripe with health insurers: The rejected claim. "Rejection notices are often unclear, as are the procedures for challenging them." The new regulations are "designed to simplify the process and expand consumers' rights, as required by the recently enacted healthcare law." Current appeals rules differ by insurer. The regulations will standardize the process, allowing consumers to first take their complaints to the insurer, and then to an independent review panel (Levey, 7/22).

Hospice Care

Hospice care is a type of care and philosophy of care that focuses on the palliation of a chronically ill, terminally ill or seriously ill patient's pain and symptoms, and attending to their emotional and spiritual needs. Care may be provided in a patient's home or in a designated facility such as nursing home, hospital unit or freestanding hospice, with level of care and sometimes location based upon frequent evaluation of the paients needs. The four primary levels of care provided by hospice are routine home care, continuous care, general inpatient and respite care.
