Greater support needed for women seeking abortion

A recent survey of women seeking abortion reveals how many resort to the internet for help with their decision making due to difficulties in discussing their dilemma with the people around them.

Study reveals that people over 60 and people with chronic diseases are most vulnerable to heat waves

People over the age of 60 are the most vulnerable to heat waves, with 82% to 92% more deaths than average occurring in this age group. Risks for heat-related illness or injury - such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion and heat cramps - are also heightened in people with obesity, heart disease, diabetes and respiratory conditions as these decrease the body's ability to adapt to temperature changes.

Insulin resistance, diabetes and metabolic syndrome contribute to premature coronary events in women

While deaths related to heart disease have declined among older people, studies suggest that death rates among younger patients have remained stagnant or increased slightly.

Inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 with antisense oligonucleotides

A part of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) viral RNA is highly conserved. Researchers have used this as a target for designing antisense oligonucleotide gapmers to cleave the RNA and disrupt virus replication. Their research is published as a preprint on the online server bioRxiv in September 2020.

Debt limit talks move to topic of finding savings in Medicare, Medicaid

In related news, projections released last week by Medicare's chief actuary concluded that spending on physician and hospital services will be significantly higher than expected if Congress reverses scheduled reductions in Medicare payments.

Medicare Hospice Care

What is Hospice Care?
Hospice care is a type of care and philosophy of care that focuses on the palliation of a chronically ill, terminally ill or seriously ill patient's pain and symptoms, and attending to their emotional and spiritual needs. Care may be provided in a patient's home or in a designated facility such as nursing home, hospital unit or freestanding hospice, with level of care and sometimes location based upon frequent evaluation of the paients needs. The four primary levels of care provided by hospice are routine home care, continuous care, general inpatient and respite care.

How long can one get medicare hospice care?
Hospice care is for people with a life expectancy of 6 months or less (if the disease runs its normal course). If the person receiving hospice care live longer than 6 months, he or she can still get hospice care.
  • A person can get hospice care for two 90-day benefit periods, followed by an unlimited number of 60-day benefit periods.
  • At the start of each period, the hospice medical director or other hospice doctor must recertify that the person is terminally ill (with a life expectancy of 6 months or less). This step is must for continued hospice care.
