College of Medicine receives grant to operate as data coordinating center for AsthmaNet research endeavor

The Penn State College of Medicine's Department of Public Health Sciences has received a grant of about $54 million over seven years to act as the data coordinating center for the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute's AsthmaNet. This grant is one of the largest in the college's history. AsthmaNet is a research collaboration of multiple clinical centers across the nation that conducts clinical trials to address new treatments and asthma management.

CMS allows doctors to drop Medicare participation agreement until Feb. 14

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced the unprecedented step of allowing doctors until Feb. 14 to drop their Medicare participation agreement and become a "non-participating" physician. Usually, doctors have to make that change before the end of a calendar year.

Lawsuit seeking to overturn FDA decision against prescription drug reimportation waiver dismissed

U.S. District Judge Alexander Williams in Greenbelt, Md., on Tuesday dismissed a lawsuit filed by Montgomery County, Md., that sought to overturn an FDA decision not to approve a waiver for a program to allow county employees to purchase lower-cost prescription drugs from Canada, the AP/Baltimore Sun reports (AP/Baltimore Sun, 8/24).

Federal appeals court in Cincinnati upholds health law

"A federal appeals court in Cincinnati on Wednesday upheld the health-care law passed by Congress last year, saying the law's requirement for most Americans to carry insurance or pay a penalty is constitutional. The vote was 2-1 on the three-judge panel on the key question of whether the insurance requirement exceeded Congress's powers under the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution. The majority concluded that it did not".
