Changes in mtDNA can cause premature ageing

The normal ageing process has long been linked to problems with cell respiration, the process through which the cells extract energy from nutrients. Researchers at the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet have now shown how certain proteins that are synthesised in the cellular mitochondria - popularly known as the cells' power plants - become unstable and disintegrate, which in turn can impair cell respiration and cause premature ageing.

Caution urged in reducing opioids for pain

After years and decades in which healthcare providers were freely prescribing opiates for all sorts of painful conditions, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published guidelines to help bring down opioid prescription rates and with them, addiction and overdose-related death rates. Though these were not binding, they urged physicians to be cautious in dealing with opioids when prescribing for pain.

PhotoMedex, Inc. announced that the Company has received from AMICO Group, its distributor in the Middle East, a multi-million dollar order to purchase XTRAC laser systems that will be installed in hospitals throughout the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The order includes customary terms and conditions, including advanced payments and letters of credit covering the purchase order. Delivery is expected to be in the third and fourth quarters of this year.
