Emergent BioSolutions awarded five grants totalling $1.2 million under QTDP Program

Emergent BioSolutions Inc. today announced that it has been awarded five separate grants under the Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project (QTDP) Program to support continued development of its therapeutic programs in oncology and autoimmunity. The grants, with a total value of over $1.2 million, will fund Emergent's TRU-016 Small Modular ImmunoPharmaceutical (SMIP™), DRACO anti-CD3 SMIP, X1 TNF-based SCORPION™, X2 CTLA4-based SCORPION, and T-Scorps-based SCORPION therapeutic programs.

Surgeon develops new way to perform deep brain stimulation

The surgeon who more than two decades ago pioneered deep brain stimulation surgery in the United States to treat people with Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders has now developed a new way to perform the surgery - which allows for more accurate placement of the brain electrodes and likely is safer for patients.

Researchers examines whether MRI can improve accuracy of Huntington's diagnosis

Huntington disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disorder caused by a defect on chromosome four where, within the Huntingtin gene, a CAG repeat occurs too many times. Most individuals begin experiencing symptoms in their 40s or 50s, but studies have shown that significant brain atrophy occurs several years prior to an official HD diagnosis. As a result, the field has sought a preventive treatment that could be administered prior to the development of actual symptoms that might delay the onset of illness.

RIFM publishes special issue on safety assessment of unsaturated alcohols

The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials, Inc. (RIFM) has now published on the RIFM web site, in the Publications section, a special issue of Food and Chemical Toxicology, Volume 48, Supplement 3, on the RIFM Human Health Group Summary, A Safety Assessment of Non-cyclic Alcohols with Unsaturated Branched Chain when used as Fragrance Ingredients.
