Plastic corneal prosthesis for patients unable to tolerate donor corneas

For many patients who become blind after an accident or illness, a corneal transplantation could restore the ability to see. Each year, 40,000 people in Europe - in Germany, about 7,000 - await the opportunity to be able to see again, thanks to cornea donors. But donor corneas are not common. Dr. Joachim Storsberg of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP in Potsdam-Golm developed material and production process for a corneal prosthesis made of plastic.

ICS use may lower risk of mortality from pneumonia and other causes in COPD patients

Treatment of COPD with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) may decrease the risk of dying from pneumonia and from other causes despite being associated with an increase in the occurrence of pneumonia, according to a new meta-analysis presented at the 2015 American Thoracic Society International Conference.

Cesarean delivery of twins increases threefold in Victoria, Australia

The proportion of twins born by cesarean delivery in Victoria, Australia increased threefold, from 24% to 71% of all twin births, during 1983–2015, despite high-level evidence that routine cesarean delivery of twins does not benefit mothers or babies, according to the authors of research published online today by the Medical Journal of Australia.

FDA drafts new rules for testing, approving drug cocktails; Public-private partnership for TB treatment development launched

The FDA is drafting new guidelines for testing and approving multidrug cocktails for life-threatening diseases, the Wall Street Journal reports. "Many diseases, such as AIDS, tuberculosis and cancer, require multidrug combinations. Such drug cocktails can prevent the development of drug resistance, because the microbe or cancer cell needs to undergo more mutations to escape several drugs than to escape just one. By attacking the disease in different ways, drug combinations also improve the chances of therapeutic benefit," the newspaper reports (Schoofs, 3/18).
