Scientists reveal the biological process leading to dangerous inflammatory disease in preemies

In a study with mice reported today in the journal Science Translational Medicine, a Johns Hopkins Medicine research team has provided what may be the most definitive view to date of the biological process leading to necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a dangerous inflammatory disease that can destroy a premature infant's intestinal lining and causes death in up to a third of the cases.

Amarantus BioScience Holdings closes $3M investment

Amarantus BioScience Holdings, Inc., a biotechnology company developing products in Regenerative Medicine, Neurology and Orphan diseases, today announced the closing of a $3M investment from an institutional investor. Under the terms of the agreement, the investor will be issued $3.3M worth of Series H Convertible Preferred Stock (including 10% original issue discount) from the Company and five year warrants exercisable for 13,200,000 shares of common stock at $0.40 per share.

High waist circumference linked to increased obesity-related dementia risk

For many years antidepressants, which are believed to work by dampening pain signals, have been the first-line drugs for neuropathic pain. "It is usual to start with an antidepressant like amitriptyline, and if this fails then try an anticonvulsant," says Phil Wiffen, a researcher at Churchill Hospital in Oxford, England. "The results of these meta-analyses suggest this is probably still the best approach to take."
