Temperature increases could slow rice production, study says

A study published online Monday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that anticipated temperature increases "could slow the growth of rice production unless farmers adapt by changing management practices and switch to more heat-tolerant varieties," Reuters reports (Fogarty, 8/10).

Clinical trial to investigate safety and effectiveness of Elagolix against endometriosis

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), endometriosis, a gynecological disorder in which cells from the uterus lining grow in other areas of the body, is the number one reason for a hysterectomy in women ages 18-35. Current treatment options for endometriosis are severely limited by side effects of existing medications and surgical options have more risks. A nationwide clinical trial is testing an investigational drug as a potential new option for patients with moderate to severe pain from this disease.

Researchers at Boston Children's Hospital in the U.S. have reported that the recent shortage of medicines used to treat coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) could be due to extensive news media coverage that results in individual hoarding or institutional stockpiling of medicines.

MAXIMUS to manage IPA program to support West Virginia's health insurance marketplace

MAXIMUS, a leading provider of government services worldwide, announced today that it has signed a new contract with the West Virginia Offices of the Insurance Commissioner to develop, manage and maintain an In-Person Assister program to support the state's health insurance marketplace. The $4.5 million contract began on July 15, 2013 and will run through July 15, 2014.
