Deep brain stimulation benefits highly treatment resistant patients with major depressive disorder

Results from the first multi-center pilot study of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for major depressive disorder were published online today by the Journal of Neurosurgery. The study, conducted at three research facilities in Canada, was designed to replicate and build upon an earlier study by Dr. Andres Lozano and Dr. Helen Mayberg which was published in the journal Neuron in 2005.

FDA sets new PDUFA action date for exenatide once weekly NDA

Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Eli Lilly and Company and Alkermes, Inc. today confirmed that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has set a new Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) action date of March 12 for its review of the exenatide once weekly new drug application (NDA).

Dems reject plan to cut Medicare costs, raise eligibility age

As negotiations over raising the nation's debt ceiling continue, two senators — Tom Coburn, R-Okla., and Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn. — advanced a new plan to produce the amount of savings from the Medicare program needed to meet the debt reduction target. The approach, though, which includes raising the eligibility age to 67, was swiftly rejected by top Democrats.
